I skimmed a few readings after listening to that interview. Walker's NPR interview is interesting in that it gives you a glimpse into her book, which explores the aesthetic of Black Cool. She also talks about the commodification of cool, and how cool as an aesthetic is used to sell products. Yet, the consumer anxiety around not owning the "correct" cool things is itself not very cool.
