Compensating for wide shoes?

I recently received a pair of Allen Edmonds as a gift and the shoe is a wider than what I typically am fitted for. I usually wear a 7D but this is a 7E.

What are some downsides to wearing a size wider and how does it affect the shoe? Is there any way to compensate for the extra width?

I cannot return them as I do not know where they bought them and nor did I receive a gift receipt of any kind. In all honesty, the feel is minimal for me, but that could be because I am a novice when it comes to wearing nice leather shoes...

Frankly, the difference between a D width and E is minimal.

If they feel loose, then a shoe repair place might have some tricks for improving the fit. Otherwise, problems like blisters and ugly shoe creasing could result. There's the option of explaining the problem to the person who bought them and getting return information from him or her.

I cannot feel the difference between the D and E, but there seems to be a solid crease on the left shoe right between the tip and where the laces are. The crease stays there even when my foot is flat on the ground. Maybe I am overreacting since this is my first "nice" shoe...
