Thinking of going with a brown checked shirt and a brown tie under a dark charcoal suit tomorrow (either black or cordovan shoes). Any thoughts on the combo?

thanks

For some reason I can't get that too look right in my head. Brown and gray are probably not a good combo of colors. It would look good in a navy suit however. For my charcoal suit (I've been trying different combo's this evening) I'd stick to solid, checked or striped baby blue, pink, purple, yellow (a really soft baby yellow), white (of course), and a light(er) shade a gray for shirts. As for the tie, just whatever color that contains my shirt color with a pattern depending on if the shirt is solid, checked or stripe.

I've worn the combo with great success. Dark charcoal with a deep satin brown is a stunning combo as they are complimentary, yet opposite tones.

Charcoal suit with brown tie but light blue shirt. I'm a huge fan of blue and brown together.

Pictures would help.

Without seeing, I would recommend no. But I could easily be disabused of this bias by photographic evidence.

I went for it and it worked out great. Two unsolicited compliments. The shirt was white with darker and lighter blue and brown stripes and the tie was brown with some small light blue squares.

Charcoal and brown can look nice together, especially if you wear the cordovan shoes.

I wore burgondy Alden shoes which look like shell cordovan ... it worked, but I didn't have the right color socks (in fact, I am not even sure what the right color socks would be)

I know, but the charcoal socks didn't look great with the shoes and the shirt/tie combo. I prefer tying the whole outfit together with my shoes and would have loved some charcoal/blue or charcoal/brown socks.
