One thing that annoys me is that few manufacturers seem to make stylish, normal-looking fall and winter jackets that are actually waterproof. I have closets full of tech outerwear for all types of winter sports and weather, but when I'm going to work in the winter, I'd like to stay dry but not look like I'm climbing a glacier.

A few years ago I bought this jacket from some German fashion brand called Wellensteyn. It's sorta but not exactly this model, but you'll get the idea:

It had some marketing story about being born in the rugged shipyards on the North Sea and built to handle the worst weather. Total bullshit. It looks really cool, but the fabric is not remotely water-resistant. It will wet out with a 5-minute walk in the rain. I tried treating it with Nikwax but it didn't make any difference.

What I want is something like this:

But no way am I paying that much for a casual jacket. Mission Workshop makes great stuff, I have one of their bike backpacks and like it, but that price is ridiculous.

Seems like there is a real gap in the market. Why can't someone make a decently priced normal jacket out of waterproof/breathable fabric and not in garish colors?
