Is it appropriate to wear black shoes and belt with light tan? Or is brown or oxblood/burg. the only appropriate option? Thanks all.

I don't think I would but that of course says nothing about it being acceptable or not.

I don't know about acceptability but brown or burgundy will undoubtedly look much better.

You "can." Dark brown or burgundy are preferable (to me).

It seems like a more British combination to me, but I may be off on that.

I think it looks really, really bad. One of the worst looks I see, actually.

Speaking of which, while vacationing in Portland, Maine last month, I saw Mick Fleetwood walking down the street (he was in town for a lawsuit involving the BBC) wearing a light tan suit and some stunningly good-looking tan bals. I don't think any black shoes could compare to a nice brown or tan pair.

Yeah, I was just going to mention that back when I did my insignificant bit to stem Red Tide of Communism by wearing the uniform of the U.S. Army every Thursday for my first two years at UCLA for ROTC drill (mandatory then for all male students who were U.S. citizens and had not had prior military service), we combined a khaki tunic and trousers with black necktie, belt and shoes, and I thought I looked pretty sharp, even though they had issued me a damn tunic that was three sizes too small and shoes that were somewhat ill fitting.

Black shoes and khaki trousers were very popular at my prep school in the '50s, even though I know the combination is anathema to the forum culture today.

Really? Mick Fleetwood? Granted, I've only seen him in a suit a few times, but it was never terribly good. Well, good for him.

Couldn't agree less. The contrast between a light tan and perfectly polished black shoes is stunning. Probably the only combination I love wearing black shoes!

I tend to agree with Details on this one. Spectators would be better than all black.
