I will be visiting NY for the first time in ages this october
.
What would be the best area of town for booking a mid-range hotel.
(I see all these names like Nolita, Tribeca etc and I have no idea what the cool areas are).
I dont really want to be close to any spot in particular but what I am looking for:
-Nice, casual, preferably artsy, stylish neighborhood.
-Decent bars and restaurants
-Good shopping.
-Good nightlife
-What should I expect to pay?(I will be staying for a week)

Any recommendations for finding a hotel online?

Thanks for your input!

Hotel prices here are horrible, in part because so many hotels have been converted to condos (better ROI) and the inventory of rooms is down, and arguably well below what the city needs. The low dollar will help you, though.

The best shopping (for the kinds of things that SFers like) is in Midtown. But Midtown does not sound like quite what you want. The Tribeca Grand is a neat hotel, probably very expensive, but in the sort of neighborhood that it sounds like you want. You will have to take a cab or the Subway uptown to hit all the decent men's stores. Avoid Times Square/Midtown West, as that is really super touristy and the restaurants are mostly bad chains. You might also enjoy the Union Square area.

I don't know of any hotels in the Village. The Gramercy Park Hotel might be cool, but I've heard that the rooms are lame.

EDIT: Damn, the GPH website says rooms start at $695/night! I remember when it was a shaggy place, one of the cheaper ones in the city. Ian Schrager renovated it, and now look. Damn.

This is the same one I was going to recommend. Great location and a really cool hotel.

Well, that's New York. But drinking/dining can be extremely cheap to make up for it, or at least a very good value when coming from Europe.

I understand that NY is expensive, but I will be staying in the US for 40 days so I need to be reasonable with my budget.
I think I will drink a lot to compensate for it.

The prices on the site lefty posted seem low to me. If those are for real, you should be able to get a decent deal.

Like another user posted - what you are looking for screams SoHo.

Although, I sorta doubt, and am not sure if there are even any hotels there.

Worth the search, though!

Just go to craigslist and get someone's appartment for a month (or at least a week at a time). A lot of people rent them fully furnished and there are some excellent deals to be had, especially if you take the full week or month...

they are not, unfortunately. The one listed @129$ is actually 405$ for example.

The hotels that I've booked through them outside of NY were the same price as the site, but those prices do seem off. lefty
