Braces - Button Placement

I've seen brace buttons both inside and outside the trousers. Is either one advantageous or more acceptable than the other? Furthermore, what is the proper method of attaching the buttons (through which layers of fabric)?

When I sew brace buttons on trousers I have the two inner most buttons directly above the crease in the trouser, or the pleat. If you have double pleats, put the outer brace button above that, or if you don't, put it 3" across from the inner button. As for the back, separate each button 1.5" from either side of the V (a proper braces back) so they're also 3" apart.

I normally just sew straight through the fabric, from the out to the in, and place all my buttons on the inside.

Yes, and always covered by a waistcoat or, with black tie, a cummerbund.

Brace buttons can be placed on the outside (front only) if the waistband is not stiff enough to resist rolling over. I put them on the outside (front only, inside button above the crease) on all of my suit pants just in case. In the back I always put them on the inside to avoid getting them caught on chairs.

Is this the consensus here on SF?

It makes sense to me, but I've had a tailor put them on and not go through the outer layer.

Well if you can avoid going through to the outer layer then do that. But as long as your thread matches the colour of your trousers, nobody is going to notice.

With a curtain waistband you can fold up the fabric and not go thru the outer waistband. The quickie DIY method is oft a lazyman operation, same with sleeve cuff buttons being stitched on right thru the sleeve lining. I have been guilty of the latter.

Outside is the original way but may are now inside. Some people have rear buttons inside and front outside to work round the tendency of the waist band to roll over at the front.

I have had inside but could well be persuaded to try outside...

Out of interest t influence my next pair could you elaborate on why outside please? I am seriously thinking of trying it but would like to understand more.

Outside buttons are more comfortable. Also the attachment is more secure since they are sewn through the cloth as well as the canvas and lining in the waistband.
