Is it ok to wear a pair of khaki pants with a pair of casual black shoes? I've been trying to upgrade my style from t-shirt and jeans everyday so I have no idea if i can wear a pair of casual canvas black shoes with a pair of khaki pants. Thanks for the advice.

Not really. It looks like somebody who doesn't know how to dress trying to dress up.

Khakis or chinos (which are better than khakis) and brown shoes would be better. Wool pants and brown shoes would be even better.

I thought khakis and chinos were more or less synonymous. Chinos are better?

To answer OP, black and khaki (the color) do not look very good together, IMHO. Although, Thom Brown seems to pull it off with a khaki colored cotton suit, white shirt and black knit tie, but that's a very specific look.

Looks like military. Anything other than black would be much better.

Yes chinos are an upgraded version of khakis. They tend to look better and last longer than khakis but still not as professional looking as wool pants.

thread is totally fucked up with people who are clueless about the rules, imo.

By black canvas shoes, do you mean sneakers? I think so of this advice is predicated on wearing leather shoes. The advice, in particular, to wear brown shoes and wool pants definitely means real shoes.

I still wouldn't wear black tennis shoes with khakis. Actually, if you want to move your style up in formality, you would do well to start wearing shoes made of leather, preferably brown.
