Big tie knot

Is there a way to detect whether or not a tie can make a big knot without trying it on?

Current ties won't make big knot for me unless I sacrifies the length. Do you guys have any tricks that can make a big knot with any ties?

you could buy either longer or thicker ties. for example, seven fold and woven ties will make a big knot because of the thickness of the material and an extra long tie can be tied into a windsor or a double windsor (or that silly knot all of the soccer coaches seem to be wearing).

The best knots are made with grenadine ties.

i also prefer a thick tie knot and only tie fih..a find, however that the 7folds(at least those made by kiton) don't do it..i buy thicker silks that are also cut wider on the thin end of the tie..lining helps also..

Both four-in-hand and Windsor knots can be "volumized" to suit, presuming you have enough length.

For a four in hand, do the main wrap twice around rather than once. You'll have what's called a Prince Albert-- still asymmetrical and narrow, just bigger.

With a full Windsor, you loop around the neckband twice on each side rather than once, creating a double windsor. This would produce a softball-sized knot if applied to a wool, grenadine, or 7-fold, but it will defitely fatten up the knot in a skinny fifties hipster tie.

There are some variations in the size of Knots. different knot techinques, different silks. Why would anyone attempt to get a knot to look so large as if they had a goiter? Simply do a few extra wraps, if you must create that apperance.

usually, thicker ties or sevenfold ties will tie larger knots. A full windsor is probably your best shot at a big knot. see this website for details.

Milano Style, A good question, first lets look at what makes a big knot: 1) Type of knot - Windsors etc 2) Thickness of silk or other fabric 3) Type of weave - example grenadines make a full knot naturally 4) Thickness of interlining 5) Width of tie where you make your knot. 6) Construction of the tie. Note 6 or 7-folds do not automatically make a big knot. By eye you can tell how wide the tie is in the knot area, and by holding the tie in your hand you can feel its weight.
