You're not going to get authentic LV for ~$500. You might get a heavily used one or a tiny little pochette or something. Same with Balenciaga, Bottega Veneta, Chanel, etc. Pretty much all "top brands" are going to be out, unless you get one used or you get a VERY little bag. I'd avoid Gucci and Prada, because some of their items are good, but some are abysmal crap that will fall apart. Nevertheless, be VERY careful if you get a "top" brand, because there are so many fakes swarming around of these that the chances of you getting an authentic one are quite slim. I also like Valentino Garavani and YSL, but they, too are very expensive. All of these top brands are going to be $1500+ at retail. Marc by Marc Jacobs is more affordable, even at retail. Quality isn't nearly as nice as the mainline, but the bags are cute and girls tend to like them. You could probably get something good for $500. Lambertson Truex women's bags tend to be a lot more than the men's ones. So, if you can find a sale, $500 might be doable. Also, look at www.eluxury.com as they have some nice things in the Sale area (check the FINAL SALE area too). You might find a cute, entry-level Fendi on sale for that price range. Also, look at the last-call or final sales at www.bergdorfgoodman.com or www.neimanmarcus.com or www.saks.com Good luck!

$500 is a difficult pricepoint for bags. LV is too expensive. Bags which are MSRP around this level are usually pretty crappy or so gaudy there is no way to know if your girlfriend will like it or hate it. To buy a $500 bag which she never uses will be an utter waste.

I would go cheaper, get something small from a newer label like Marc Jacobs, or a Vanessa Bruno tote. its $200 for a cotton tote bag. yikes.
