Other than a good deal of exercise and a fair amount of companion obedience work, I didn't "work" my Tosas to any degree, yet they seemed like happy, contented dogs. At least I never saw any signs of frustration or neurosis like destructive chewing, etc.

As I said, Jan, there are many avenues to "work" your dog that will allow him to be what he was intended or at the very least enjoy a fulfilling life that goes beyond the walkies that the average pet dog receives. The question had to do with the interaction between an owner and a working dog versus a pet dog. I think there's a stronger bond. Others may disagree.

I think I get what you mean. I have sometimes thought that having a top-flight working bird dog or a really good RingSport Mal would be a bond beyond any that I have experienced, much though I loved my Tosas. However, losing a dog like that, especially in an untimely manner, would be a pain beyond endurance, I should think.
