Most of the more expensive whiskies are either of the really rich kind or the really peaty kind; I think perhaps because age sits better on the darker flavors rather than the bright sweet ones. So I might actually suggest you do a haul of a number of awesome things instead of one awesome thing. If you are set on the expensive special bottle, consider Cragganmore 29; Crag has one of the most expansive non-peat noses in whisky, and I think the 29 sings. For a sherry bomb, I really enjopy Glenfarclas 21, but it is only like $125 or so -- quite a bargain. The few Glenfarclases I've had that were older were a little past it for their flavor profile for me. But then again I have not had that many.

If you wanted to buy several sweeter whiskies, I would absolutely consider Glenmorangie Astar, which is sweet, rich, and very tasty; Auchentoshan Three Wood, which has been aged in three types of casks, but is mild and thus takes on those characteristics very well; Glenmorangie Nectar d'Or which having been aged in Sauternes casks, has a definite sweet note but also all that botrysized flavor which you have to like.

Since you like Oban, the Oban Distillery Edition was aged in (oh, I forget what, some sweet wine) casks and is a touch sweeter than the standard with more pronounced dry saltiness. Glenmorangie Signet may be up your alley, but I have not tried it. Oh, an older Longmorn would also be nice.

Were I to drop 250 on a whisky just for taste rather than to fill holes in my collection I would probably go Port Ellen (very peaty, but I had a 34yo that blew me away), Highland Park 25 because it is an awesome all-arounder in Scotch, or the Crag 29.

Enjoy! That might very well be my favourite scotch. I got it for 215 sterling, which is about $340 at the moment in Heathrow duty free. I thought that was a pretty good deal. $300 is very good indeed.

Which bottling? I got the 2008. To be honest, i probably wouldn't spring for it again...its great don't get me wrong, but not 3 times as good as the 18...

I think it must have been the 2011, but I don't have it in front of me to check. Both bottlings are on the website for $349.99 I note.

I am in the very early ages of exploring Scotch, just bought my first bottle of Glenlivet. I really like it, but want to branch out and explore others. Was thinking of trying a Highland Park 12 year, as it sounds like this is a nice bridge in to some peat & smoke without going full speed in to a Laphroig or such.

Thoughts?

Who knows about Isle of Jura? I had some of the 16 year old "Diurachs' Own" with desert last night. I enjoyed it, but I don't think I was able to get a very good read on it. The peat was there (though not as strongly as with islays). I thought I got some hints of oak from what I assume were sherry casks given the color of the scotch. It seemed to have a bit of a bite/spice that built and the warmth of the finish turned to a bit of a burn if drank to quickly.

Anybody know anything about this dram?
