So I have finally decieded that my next pair of shoes/boots will be the Alden Indy boots.

But for some reason I can't find much info on them. For example what diffrent soles they come in and what diffrent uppers they come in.

I would need a rubber sole and an upper that would repel water/snow/salt.

What can everyone here recommend?

none of the uppers are particularly water or salt proof.

you basically have the base model or the Kudu model among your options. I believe the Kudu has rubber commando sole but I am not 100% sure

you walk in a rainstorm, your feet will get wet

Not exactly. The standard Indy (405) comes in Horween's Austin leather. The Leather Soul Ultimate Indy and forthcoming new Alden version (403) are Horween Chromexcel. The Kudu version (404) is considerably more rugged and comes with a lug sole.

I have the 403 and love it. They all have rubber soles, but the Leather Soul is a commando style, and the Kudu is lugged.

You are right though, none of them are particularly waterproof. The 403 heavily coated in Obenauf's LP is the closest.

From what I've read none of them are really great for salt. Maybe treating them with something would help with the salt.

+1

I recently picked up a pair of Alden #8 Shell NST Boots (commando) for the sole purpose of trudging around in the rain/snow. I have not had them long but they have already had double-digit snow days (on three continents) and have been excellent. No wet feet here.

I'm stoked for my 403 in Chromexcel, on order from Leffot. Should be here within the month.

You must waterproof your boots. Use Sno-seal (I have on my Redwings, it poured like hell today in NY, I was outside in the rain, my feet are dry and water beaded like on a well-waxed car).

Obenauf's LP will work, too. Leffot is also selling some excellent waterproofing cream. I like the Sno-seal, because it has worked since 1933, is the cheapest, and is awesome.

Please search as there is an insane amount of info on these.

I was just wondering if anyone else has experience with Indys in the rain. Im mainly looking for something that can take some rain abuse without my feet getting wet. It seems I would have to apply sno seal to the welts and leather. The fallback option is some LL Bean boots which I actually find somewhat attractive but they arent that versatile. As mentioned in the Quoddy thread Im also considering some Grizzly Boots
