I have a friend's fiance who is attending a wedding in about 6 weeks in Dorset. The attire is "morning suit encouraged." At least that's what she told me - seems like odd phrasing but who knows.

I don't think he is going to have a morning suit made. If you weren't going to wear morning dress - what would you wear to such an event?

Thanks!

Never been to Dorset. I have no idea the relevance of the location
to dress. A dark suit and a "wedding tie" should be appropriate:

In a pinch, I'd wear what I usually wear at important occasions: DB navy suit. Plus a wedding tie.

But, since morning dress is encouraged, if I had time, I'd nod to the morning dress rules and break out my dark charcoal 6x1 DB, wearing it with B&W houndstooth trousers and a wedding tie. The DB version of this black lounge. More images in the AskAndy stroller thread, like this one:

Or, if I were in LA, I could even have J. Behr make me a lounge coat that's cutaway like a morning coat, but has the easy waist of a standard lounge coat! No waist seam there. (On second thought, no, I wouldn't. Don't think it works well without the waist suppression.)

Another option is to wear an odd double-breasted waistcoat with a darker lounge suit. The nice thing about morning-dress-encouraged is that you can mix-and-match from the various parts of the rig, which is what gents actually did in the 30s. And folks do that often in Italy, sometimes with a special wedding lounge coat that's cut away and truly nipped at the waist to look like a short morning coat. It's still a lounge coat, though, not a body coat, because it has no waist seam. Looks better than the long and easy-waisted Behr, to my eye. I'd wear it if I had occasion.

I second @Testudo_Aubreii...morning suit is the daytime equivalent of white tie, the next step down would be a stroller which is the daytime equivalent of a tuxedo. If you can get your hands on black jacket you can basically Frankenstein one since it doesn't have tails, all you need is charcoal or charcoal striped trousers and a contrasting vest.

A secondary choice would be DB navy or light grey suit.

some stroller looks below:
