I'm not well-versed in hats.

Can someone kindly confirm the hat I bought is a Fedora?

Looks like one to me. Dictionary says a soft felt hat worn by men.

Thank you all, especially Texas Jack. So it's a Trilby.

Yes, it looks very similar to the hat Sinatra was wearing. The strange thing is that it doesn't look good on many people, including Sinatra (but that's only my personal opinion), while it looks good on me.

Trilbies tend to look better on people with narrow shoulders or necks. When worn by someone with wide shoulders and a thick neck, they look like someone who spends too much time at the greyhound races.

With my narrow shoulders and long face, I can't wear fedoras at all. They just look entirely out of proportion.

Ah the trilby. The preferred headgear of "racing identities", "persons of interest to the police" and sundry spivs, including Minder's Arthur Daley.

OTOH, I believe the fedora was the favoured tile of machine-gun toting Chicago hoodlums.

How does one choose?

Clearly by visiting City Hatters at Flinders Street Station and trying on their wide selection.

A small collection by same standards, but certainly versatile. I intend to include a grey Akubra Hampton or Whippet come Autumn.
