2 button vs 3 button suits

forget 2 and 3 button just go for 1 as most only button up 1 anyway also it make it look so much more elegant!

Again with the black suits! I have a black Boss suit (I'm short and broad, so it fits great), and when paired with a white shirt with broad light purple and light gray bars and a bright light purple Barbara tie, it looks killer at an evening dinner. Don't understand the constant badmouthing of the black suit.

I too like the lower three button suits, where you can safely button the middle only. I have a casual cotton jacket from Express that has a lower three button stance. The regular height ones I've kind of grown out of in taste, which is unfortunate since just earlier this year I had one made. :-/ Ah well, you live and learn. The badmouthing of the black suit is mostly because it's the colour reserved strictly for evening formal (tail coat) and semi-formal (dinner jacket) functions. It also stems from that a lot of unwise men wear them in daytime and it's not particularly flattering then, unless of course you're going to a funeral (where many just wear grey or charcoal these days) or happen to be Neo.

I guess if you're going to wear a black suit, do it in the evening. I'd personally opt for navy blue to look a little more lively.

Thanks, I didn't know Black suits were reserved only for evening wear. I dont wear suits often, and when I do, they're for evening wear anyways. But i started this thread, so i can buy a work suit. I will opt for a navy or a charcoal suit. Thanks.

As far as suits in the price range go, I've liked some of Banana Republic's offerings. They have a conservative navy suit in now that would work well for job interviews for the recent college grad, for example. But I've been very disappointed in everything I've seen from their Heritage line. They offered a covert coat last winter that looked great online but terrible when I saw one in real life.

J. Crew suits and sport jackets do little for me. While Banana Republic's suits are hit-and-miss, I've never seen a non-summer suit at J. Crew that I would fully endorse, even at the price point.

That said, one can find much better-made suits for less than the retail price of either a J. Crew or BR suit. Corneliani, for example, can be found at STP for under $400 periodically. For that, you'd be getting a fully canvassed workhorse with a decent amount of handwork, versus a fused, made in Turkey number with no handwork at BR.

BR is, however, good about offering their suits on deep discount, so keep your eye on the sales rack. I picked up a complete suit early this year for the princely sum of $50, and for $50, it's a good looking suit for wear when spills/mishaps are likely.
