    B. Nelson NYC Shoe Repair

Definitely give them a call. You will find them helpful, but it may be difficult for them to evaluate a repair unless they have the shoe in hand. Good luck.

Ceoceo: Perhaps you meant, "How does one obtain SF member special pricing?" I live in Manhattan. I took my ailing shoes to the best in NYC. Nick spontaneously offered a discount. I was grateful; I accepted.

Chogall: It required a new welt. I don't know whether or not it was done by "hand." Perhaps there was some machine intervention. Regardless, it was well done.

    B.Nelson does a great job

Yes, and the "not flush mounted" work fine. Had them for years, and yes, they must be replaced periodically. The more expensive flush mounted are a much nicer solution to the toe-wear problem. I will have all new shoes flush mounted at B. Nelson unless they are factory mounted.

My ignorant guess is just that: improperly waxed thread. We shall have to wait for an expert opinion.

Dissolved? No. Apparently unstable, however. Nick suggested that I had grounds for contacting Vass and asking that they make it right. They may well have done so, but I chose to place my shoes in Nick's hands. A modest sum of money gave me back my shoes better than ever. I live in the...

We would, of course, like to see some pictures, Shikar. In the spirit of this thread, please see my recent tribute to Nick's work: http://www.styleforum.net/t/309996/b-nelson-nyc-shoe-repair.

It's not color no. 8. Vass may not use Horween's as their shell source. It was a chocolate brown initially; the reddish tones are the result of occasional polish intended for color no. 8. I do really like no. 8. I have three pairs of Alden shell in that color.

I'm very happy with recent major shoe repair from Nick Valenti's shop in NYC. Several months ago I noticed some fuzzy white material between the upper and the sole on one of my Vass Norwegers in shell cordovan on the New Peter last. These are about five years old and well tended. Puzzled, I...

    advice on shoe damage, please

I'm happy to report that today I exchanged the flawed shoes for new cordovan captoes in color no. 8 at Brooks Brothers, 346 Madison Avenue, NYC. They tried first a repair, with the agreement that they would exchange if I found the repair cosmetically inadequate. Well, just as DWFII said, the...

By the way, fritzl, I respect your appreciation of fine shoes, but my "kind of logic" is based on simple physics.

Thank you for your responses, gentlemen. I wouldn't dream of putting my shoes on without a shoehorn.

    advice on shoe damage, please

I have two pairs of Alden cordovan shoes purchased at Brooks Brothers about three years ago. I take good care of my shoes (Edward Green, Alden cordovan, Vass) and so was surprised and dismayed to notice damage at the heal of the upper on one shoe (sorry, don't know the correct terminology)...
