SW&D isn't as bad as some MC'ers make of it. MC isn't as bad as some SW&D'ers make of it. The prejudices both ways are amusing but generally silly, which in turn makes them amusing again. Sometimes.

How casual? Out on the town type clothes or fishing and field working clothes? The latter I purchase at a local fishing store, the former I purchase at a variety of places but mainly the internet.

BB, Polo, J. Crew etc. are OK. Keep look in simple and classic. Highlight your look with your well made accessories.

If really want to look good and casual, try European designer stuff. I like YSL, Lanvin, Burberry and Valentino in particular. Not to buy the runway stuff, but their permanent line, bold color, classic design. My suggestion is well made outwear, plain basic pants, good shoes/boots and basic layering would look good.

As an opera singer, I can tell you all that less and less people dress up for the opera. It's becoming much less formal and a 20-something may even seem out of place in a tuxedo at opening night. This is especially true at regional companies where no one dresses formally. Nowadays you see more young and middle-aged people in dark jeans and a blazer. The ability to dress up casual clothing for special occasions (yes, including jeans and shorts, love 'em or hate 'em) is becoming more and more important.

Not an issue for me. My "local" venue is the Met in NYC.

Then you're lucky. Even there you see a fair amount of "dressy casual" looks, or people who just wandered in with student or rush tickets. Unless it's opening night or a superstar gala.
