I would really like to pick up a pair of chelsea boots, but I can't figure out whether to get brown or black. My typical look is a somewhat dark (but more faded toward the knees) pair of Levi 501's and a casual collared shirt, usually some shade of blue. I also recently picked up a nice black shirt and another turquoise shirt that I would maybe like to match with the boots. Usually I wear a pair of Chuck Taylors or a pair of suede Adidas tennis shoes, but I want to get just a little bit dressier. Right now I'm leaning toward black, not shiny of course.

I've done a bit of research about whether black shoes goes with jeans at all, but I'm getting mixed signals. Some say it is a fasion faux pas and jeans should be worn with brown shoes (in which case I should pick up the brown chelsea boots). Others disagree. What are some thoughts on this?

i wear black chelseas and brown jodhpurs (very similar to chelseas), so either works in my opinion.

Not to hijack the post, but do Chelsea boots come in burgundy? I'm sure they do, but I just haven't seen any.

I think I've seen a picture of one - I think it was from Paul Stuart, made by Grenson masterpiece. I think aportnoy owns one. It's either a chelsea or a jodhpur, can't remember for sure.

Pretty hard to find burgundy chelseas. I have a burgundy pair from Paul Smith that have a wingtip and brogueing, and are chelseas.

I had a pair of Miu Miu burgundy jodphurs that I sold last year

They're out there but few and far between

Those sound like 100% what I'm looking for.

Alden's Shell Cordovan #8 is pretty close to a dark burgundy, right?

To the OP, you're likely going to end up owning boots in both black and brown, so just pick whatever you want first :p

I like dark brown suede. Works great with both jeans and khakis/chinos.

Edit: something like this pair Parker had on sale a while back
