Velvet coat for a teenager

Hey,
I'm in my late teens and love to "dress to impress". Anyways, the problem is with my age; I would love to dress as formal as possible, but it would just look weird on a kid....

So, the question is; would a velvet coat for daily wear look unusual or could I pull it off? It would be always worn only on top of layered sweaters.

PS:
The reason I'm asking is that I have way too much mixed opinions on this one; some say it's dated and not modern anymore, some say go for it...

Velvet coats over layered sweaters would look unusual on most people. On a teenager it would look slightly comical to say the least.

I almost feel bad for telling you no, because you're a kid and making dumb fashion decisions is part of finding your style. But ultimately, I think you'd look back on this phase of "dressing to impress" when it's not necessary, dressing to fit the occasion is an important concept and the fact is no kid is ever in an occasion where a velvet coat is appropriate. Kids who think they look dressed to impressed usually give off a "dressing in daddy's clothes" vibe. Good luck!

You're a teenager, anything more than a clean t-shirt and decent jeans is overdressed.

Just get polos and button-up shirts from the clearance rack at hollister/a&f or whatever store in the mall, decent dark jeans and a pair of clarks desert boots and you're set for high school. And a decent leather jacket at that.

Save the velvet jacket for prom if you mean the coat is a sports jacket.

At your age, the only item I could envision translating decently into velvet would be a baseball cap or newsboy cap.

A velvet baseball or newsboy cap? Dear god, are you trying to ruin this kid's chances of ever having friends?

Maybe the kid wants to ensconce himself in velvet; if only it were socially acceptable. George Costanza knows.
