If it hasn't been said, make sure you talk about how you can help them. Quantify if you can. Talk less about yourself and more about the needs you will. Here is a rough draft. Probably has many errors so please do not cut and paste it, but use your own voice.

Dear [Mr. Wigglebottoms],

I am writing you to offer my services as a Sales Associate. Over the years I have developed a passion for quality traditional men's clothing and style. This passion has lead me to ____insert organization_____. Where I ______insert quantified accomplishment______. (repeat up to 3)

Beyond this experience I follow independently what is going on in the fashion industry and am familiar with construction methods, styles and materials including topics ranging from recognizing hand-stitching to coordinating color combinations that you clientele are looking for. This knowledge can be used to communicate trends and traditions to better serve the customers at [Wigglebottoms & Chestybiggums] and build a solid loyal customer base for your store.

Of course this is just a sampling of my knowledge, skills and abilities and would be more than happy to sit down with you and discuss your needs at a time that is convenient for you. I can be reached at KL5-1234 or [email protected]

Don't talk about your weakness, talk about your strengths. Make your fine dining restaurant work experience sound exactly like a commissioned sales position and show concrete examples of how you kicked ass at it and how you know it is applicable to clothing sales
Exactly.

to the width of tie that will work best for you (relying on build and lapel width rather than seasonal trends). Furthermore, I have developed a very good eye for fit, which I believe I could use to help potential customers find the items that will help them look their best.
no no no...don't you know that they don't want you to be able to tell someone what tie works best? If they have seasonal trends on the shelf, seasonal trends look the best!. Also I am pretty sure it is SOP that everything fits perfectly and makes you look like a million bucks (unless there is a more expensive item that fits better).

Certainly not at like a BR but a resume might not be a bad idea to clip to the application (they probably don't want to read a cover letter though). I got a job at a car dealership the summer before college by doing something like this. I had filled out some form on their website but it didn't really feel right so I decided to stop by in person. I had a copy of my resume, and I also made a 1pg sheet with some photography I had done of a pair of cars (dealer's manufacturer of course) that I had given a full detail and taken some photos of. I felt pretty lame about it while doing it; the photos weren't bad (my dad is a pro photographer so...I sort of know what I am doing) but it was certainly a gimmick that went above what was required. It showed a certain interest for the vehicles though.

I went in, filled out my paper app, stuck my resume and photos in and asked the receptionist who to give it to. She said to give it to someone over in service--I think I tried to ask a mechanic rather than one of the guys who deals with customers/assigns work. He pushed me into the service managers office (since what is a mechanic going to do with a job app?). I got kind of a gruff "what?" until he realized I was a stranger. We talked for a minute, he got to the pictures, asked about them, and I told him what they were. I pretty much got a "when can you start?" and I attribute some of that to the extra **** I threw in there (even though it felt lame).

You know it's horrible when your looking for help from people online and someone has to be to be ignorant..I started my morning by helping my 18 year old daughter to do a cover letter and resume so that's why I logged onto the site. The asshole that ask if you were 12 is probably laying on the couch at their parents house living off them, got food on their face because their to darn lazy to get up to go wipe it off and last but not least ....they've never worked a day in their life. Sorry to everyone reading this but it just pisses me off when someone is reaching out for advice and you get someone replying with their ignorance and insults ..So my question is...HOW OLD ARE YOU?
