Hey everybody,

in a couple of weeks I'll be visiting the States. I will land at O'Hare and need to get to Indianapolis. Besides renting a car, what are my best options?

- Flying: I understand most domestic flights out of Chicago leave from Midway? Is that correct? Is there a connection between O'Hare and Midway that will enable a quick connection?

- Train: Amtrak? Anywhere close to O'Hare? Connected to O'Hare?

- Bus: Greyhound? Other private companies? Again, close to or connected to O'Hare?

- Private Carpooling: As it's quite common in Germany, is there such a thing with a central website in the States, too?

I realize, that I might find some of the information I am looking for through thourough search on the Internet, however, I'd appreciate if you could answer me, especially if you have experience when it comes to which is the most effective / cost effective way to travel!

Thanks in advance from Germany

p

United Airlines has frequent flights from O'Hare to Indy. It's a short flight, only about 40 minutes. It'll take you over 3 hours to drive to Indy from O'Hare, and possibly over 4 if it's around rush hour. I'd fly if I were you, which is what I do if I have to be north of the city, traffic is too much of a hassle otherwise.

Thanks a lot! Esp. the traffic part convinced me, as I will be arriving in the late afternoon. Got a ticket for flights back and forth.

Thanks again and best regards from Germany!

If you have frequent flyer miles with Lufthansa you should be able to use them for a cheap flight on United from O'Hare to Indy if you only need to go one way.

Edit: guess you needed round trip.

If you're from Germany, you will be sorely disappointed by how terrible our trains and buses are. Unless you're travelling within the city of Chicago itself (O'Hare to Midway?), don't take the bus or the train. I would recommend driving (whether it's you or someone else) or grabbing a flight.

I lived in Indianapolis for a year when I was 16, so I know about the predominance of cars as means of transportation, then again, it has been a while.

Thanks for the responses, now I just hope SAS gets me to O'Hare in time for me to get the UA flight.
