I suppose this is really subjective. Many would say the same about the shoes made in the Austro-Hungarian tradition that you so covet.

agreed, it's subjective and it's hard to understand, if you have never handled a balanced pair of shoes. either it's english, italian, french, spanish or of A-H origin.

the darlton is by no means not a good pair of shoes. i just wanted to understand the hype. i don't stand back to critizize shoes from e.g. vass or the usual aspects. so what?

Yes, that's the MTO Horween Gunmetal shell with Tirolese Hand Welting and crepe soles. A long wait, but worth it.

I have heard you talk about "balanced shoes" in the past and I never knew what you meant. After you mentioned the size of the heel stack on the Darltons I compared them to a few of my Aldens and the heels were much bigger (not higher, longer)! You sir have a well developed eye for shoes.

Loving the Vass double monks in shell.
I purchased these dark brown wingtips from eBay a few days back. I think they're by the same makers that are responsible for the Gieves & Hawkes shell shoes.
Should have some better photos when they actually arrive.

I had this shoe in calf. It is very solid. In shell it looks beautiful.
