The Qualities of a Good Men's Tie

Its really about the thickness and the quality of construction to me. I wear all of my ties really often and I like a fuller knot (but I only ever use a FIH) so it has to be thick and durable. I also like my ties fairly wide.

I'll get flak for this, but the Countess Mara ties I bought at Marshalls (10-15 dollars) have done me well. They knot up really well, come in interesting patters and woven designs, and they have held their shape perfectly after having been worn frequently.

The best ties freely convert to and from FIH to bow with a simple flick of the wrist, similiar to hailing a cab.

Taking into account the quality of fabric, I was always under the impression that 7-fold ties (my 7-fold ones are Kiton) tend to be considered quality ties. I find that they make nice knots and hold their shape well... or maybe I'm just more careful with them because they cost an arm and a leg compared to my Psycho Bunny ties

I don't really look into brand with it comes to ties. ATM, I've been on a madras tie frenzy. Mostly from J.Crew, 3sixteen or Pierrepont Hicks.

is self tipped a good barometer? like pinching the lower part of the suit jacket to see if it is canvassed? is there one element you can look at to see if a tie is good? sevenfold is probably not a good measure since there are many good ties that are not sevenfold. were talking about good here mind you an not the ne plus ultra.

Sam Hober ties belong on that list of top-ties. I have about a half-a-dozen or so and they are absolutely first rate.
