Chicago is definitely Worth a visit, and it's not too far from the east coast if you have any money to travel...

Shopping, no matter where you are, there will be thrift shops called Salvation Army, Goodwill, or simply "thrift shop" or "consignment store". These places will have used, sometimes vintage, cool, etc clothes. I think this is what you are looking for. You will find all kinds of cool shops like that in Boston and NYC, don't worry!

Places worth visiting:
1) Boston for history
2) New York for diversity, shopping and must-do sightseeing
3) Washington for museums and must-do sightseeing
4) Any small town in the South and Midwest for understanding the America of Rush Limbaugh and Fox News
5) Miami or New Orleans for recovering from item 4)
6) Arizona/New Mexico for landscape
7) L.A. for all the Hollywood crap
8) San Francisco for beauty

Orlando is only interesting if you are a child and into Disney Theme Parks

Las Vegas is know as "America's playground" and not as "the World's playground" for a reason: For people used to the light spectacle of Asian cities, the whole thing looks just poor. For Europeans, the concept of overweight people going to Casinos in flip flops and shorts is just inherently wrong.
