This is a bit of a different post, but in light of all the establishments that have left Savile Row in the past few years, and the loss of Edward Sexton, I wanted to highlight the happy retirement of another SR Lion, Brian Lewis. Brian has been working in the bespoke SR trade since 1961, most recently as a director/cutter at Meyer & Mortimer. It’s nice to celebrate these institutions (both people and businesses) while we still have them.
Although I now mostly see Paul Munday at M&M, Brian cut my first M&M coat, and was a truly enjoyable gentleman to get to know. He has an encyclopedic knowledge of British military history, especially as it relates to officers’ uniforms, and carries a royal warrant for one of the Queen’s regiment’s uniforms.
He has cut for film stars in movies, including Ray Fiennes in Coriolanus and Michael Madsen in Reservoir Dogs.
Truly a treasure trove of information about the Row, traditions, tailoring, cloths, etc., and a testament to the apprentice system.
Enjoy your retirement Brian.
