honestly i think just buying her that loom thing might be really good. she's into knitting, sewing, she plays a bunch of instruments, records music, paints, etc, while i spend all my time dicking around online and eating chinese food.

Yeah, that's exactly it. It's really easy to learn the basics, you can do some cool stuff, and you can have it on your lap anywhere - couch, road trip, etc.
