Was just talking to a lady friend of mine today who has been trying to kick the habit. She says that's impossible for her to quit because she loves to smoke after sex. She's mostly given up smoking the rest of the day but can't give up the after **** drag. I told her to just run with it and don't end up marrying a "speed ******". What can ya do?

I smoked for about 15 pack years. I quit, quite miraculously, when I started looking closely at everyday smokers. No, not the gorgeous 20-year old model smoking outside the club at 2am. I started looking at office workers on their lunch breaks, smokers standing at the bus station, people just casually puffing along in their day to day lives. I started paying very close attention to their physical qualities: their postures; their smiles, their hands; their skin; etc. I also starting paying attention to the social contexts in which these people smoked. Despite what most people say, smoking is actually a very anti-social activity when you pay close enough attention to the people doing it. More often than not, smokers are solitary. Over the course of a few days, I no longer wanted to smoke.

I think its funny that on a forum fascinated with personal aesthetics that no one has mentioned that ninety-nine times out of a hundred smokers look appreciably worse (whether it's their physical or psychic appearance) than non-smokers.

A forum fascinated with personal aesthetics is also youth oriented. Youth do not exhibit the ravages of 20 yrs of smoking.

Haven't had one since Monday morning. Chewing the nicotine gum like a madman. Drinking my morning coffee as I type this. I know I'm going to want to have one right afterward. It hasn't been too bad. I had some friends over and had a few drinks last night. Surprisingly, I was able to resist smoking (even though I wanted one badly). The thing is, I feel so much better already. I'm breathing easier, sleeping better, have more energy and even my skin looks/feels so much better. I'm trying to concentrate on the positive affects in order not to fall back into the routine. Today will be a real test, however, as my wife and I will be running errands all day and I am used to smoking in the car on the weekends. Wish me luck.

I ******* hope so. I'm considering leaving the forum until it gets better, because of the recent spate of stupid assholes trying to pick fights with me. I swear to god, I will not be ok if Douglas, for example decides to keep bugging me in the iPhone thread.

WTF is up with these people trying to instigate ****?

I'd rather not, but honestly - I need the money.

I'm spending $3000+ a year on smokes.
