Thanks guys! I thought it looked pretty good for something that's been sitting in a closet for around 20 years. As an added bonus, it seems to be of better quality than most of the suits I've bought recently. The fabric has a very heavy feel and the construction seems quite good, at least based on my limited knowledge in that area.

I do not find this sited dated at all, the tailoring kind of gives it a more universal look to it. I think if you can get a good fit out of it then go for it.

looks good, very wearable.

if you want to polish it a little, then clean up the back (let out a bit below the collar, bring in the waist area), maybe take out the sleeves, but I think you can instead move your shirt cuff button over so the shirt actually hits higher, and with shoes you'll probably have to shorten the pants but do that once the waist is at the right level.

enjoy!

PS - are you sure this is a 20 year old suit?

May want to consider some minor alterations, but otherwise, you're good to go. And very cool story of course.

What exactly makes the waistcoat dated?

I'm pretty sure it's at least 20 years old, maybe more. My dad doesn't wear a suit very often, but I can't remember the last time I saw him wear it.

I'm also curious about what makes the waistcoat dated. Is it something I could wear occasionally for a bit of a different look or should I banish it altogether?

it won't be SF approved, but I say try the vest with a dress shirt and jeans or something to wear out casually to the bars or classes... assuming you're under 25 or so...
