I like a black knit with a steel blue suit, but would much prefer a light grey tie with a navy suit for a wedding. It is, after all a cheerful event.

Why would you not consider this classic? I'm probably a noob compared to many of you guys online here, but at least my impression is that where I'm from (Norway), this is the typical attire for finer occations like weddings or NYE.

Any tips for tie color? I'd prefer keeping it darkish, so not red etc.

No. Has someone died, I thought I read "wedding"?

No one wears such attire in civilised company.

This is going to seem harsh, but if you are from Norway you really need to observe what everyone around you is wearing - and then put on something entirely different yourself. Norwegians are so clueless that if you dress perfectly yourself, they will make you look like the fool at the party.

Yes, I am Norwegian too.

Edit: as a case study, look at pictures of prominent Norwegians and then calculate the odds that a random person even knows something as terribly basic as not to button the lower button on his suit jacket. I cringe whenever I see pictures of our former Prime Minister next to say, Obama or worse yet, Putin - wearing a too-large suit with all three buttons buttoned, a shirt with a collar not cut to be worn with ties, and a limp windsor knot on his cheap tie. Sometimes I wonder if he actually does know how to dress, but refuses to do so in public in order to keep up his "socialist" appearance.
