The ghost of my grandfather who committed suicide when I was eight used to visit my mother when my dad went on out-of-town business trips. She would wake up in the middle of the night and he'd be standing there, staring at her. She'd blink a few times and he'd still be there. I guess he was keeping watch while my dad was gone.

My friends had a ghost in their house that would leave candle wax drippings.

They had the wax analyzed. It was tallow based wax that is not used any more.

They never saw the ghost, only heard it walking around the house.

Their neighbor saw it once, however, through the window. (Didn't see a person, just a glowing light.)

The house was old, and had been used as a Civil War hospital.

The candle wax thing gives me the creeps.

I once went on a ghost hunt in York, England. We stopped at all the places of brutal murders. Some people in the group felt things grab them, though I didn't.

I'm really fascinated by ghosts but never had an encounter. I did smell a burning candle inside my grandmother's room the day she died. It was probably her saying her goodbye.

That's an encounter, Maharlika; a nice one at that. I once smelled roses in the middle of the desert, where there were none anywhere around. Didn't scare me, but it was pretty strange.

Jeez, I've had so many encounters myself, I almost don't know where to begin--mostly shadows, wisps, sounds, and a couple of physical nudges (gaah!). The first time I saw a 'human' figure, it passed very quickly down the hall of an apartment I was living in at the time. Freaked the hell out of me. I only saw another like that one more time, in broad daylight, coming toward me on a street. It was, um, a little surprising when it just wasn't there anymore.

I guess that was an 'encounter' even though I did not see anything. I really like your roses story. That happened to me too---and it was in the middle of winter, no roses around!

This reminds me of something that's happened to my mom on a number of occasions. My grandfather used to like playing tricks on her as a kid. He would often hide her socks, shoes, pens, etc. Years after he died, she would still experience the "tricks." Among other things, she remembers setting down earrings on the counter in the bathroom before showering. When she got out, they were missing. She thought she had simply misplaced them and went ahead putting on a different pair. Later that night she went to bed and found the earrings tucked neatly under the pillow. I was thinking today if I've ever experienced anything and it hit me that I might have. My father's old house was rather bizarrely built in that you had to walk through a bathroom to get into the back of the house which was a long hallway that connected to the office. He moved out after about 10 years of living there but once over breakfast we confessed to each other how uncomfortable that hallway made us. Whenever you opened the bathroom door you would always except to see someone sitting in the office . Once in the office the feeling vanished, but when you left to walk back down there was this unsettling feeling of being watched. What's odd is that we separately remarked that the worst period was several years after we had moved in and only lasted a few months. My father didn't tell me then because he thought it was childish, but that was around the time one of his best friends died of cancer. Who knows. Another story I was reminded of has nothing to do with "people" per se. My uncle and his friend were driving back home very late at night. No cars for miles, clear night, and my uncle was driving but getting tired. He noticed in front of him that there was a brick wall in the middle of the 2-lane highway. He woke up his buddy and brought the truck to a stop. He and his buddy both got out of the truck to figure out what the hell a brick wall was doing blocking the road. They got within a few feet of it when it slowly began to disappear "almost like fog" as he told me. What was it? A warning to stay awake? It's just impossible to explain a hallucination that occurred to two people who could separately describe the same exact thing.
