I want a one-and-done black cap-toe Oxford I can wear for all formal occasions (weddings, funerals, etc). I’m obsessing over the last 10% and I need opinions. Yes I’m buying them used and yes I’ve tried on at least most of these shoes (the Vass are hard to find in the states though).

Assume the condition of the shoes are excellent. I’m really asking “these all seem pretty similar, which pick is the best value?”

Are EG worth twice the price of Vass or C&J? Is JL worth more than EG?

I have the EG Chelsea on the 82 and I would say it is a profoundly beautiful cap toe oxford. In black it would make the perfect formal shoe for everything.

My next suggestion would be the C&J.

Where the hell are you getting these shoes this cheap, though?

The ‘Bay. I have a unique size so they’re hard to sell and thus cheaper than your usual used finds

I recently bought Peal & Co. black oxfords (made for Brooks Brothers by Church's) in Canada for the equivalent of about $89 USD on clearance at BB in Vancouver...brand new shoes in perfect condition.

This post is not just to brag about my shopping conquest...lol...but a reminder that Brooks Bros can sometimes kill it with a sale...and provide a superb shoe in a basic style for a killer price.

so is your vote for C&J? It’s the cheapest English shoe on my list that is in roughly the same aesthetic as Peal

Yes - I like C&J (who also make shoes under the Peal & Co label...I have some of those too)...but check whether BB has any sales on! They have run big shoe sales in both Canada and the US over the last few years. Sometimes a downright steal!

I got my Chelsea on the 82 in DOAK. When I compared with the John Lobb City II, I preferred the look and the leather on the EG, it seemed superior to my eye and touch, but it could have been due just to the individual samples I saw since there is variety in the skins used.

yeah at this point I’m fairly certain I’d take the EG over the JL.

question is it worth double the other two

I won't answer your question what shoes to pick, but I have EG Chelsea on 202 last in black calf and I like them very much, they are really beautiful in every aspect.
