Although it would be really hard to see a #70257 in person, no? Unless of course you are you or GZ :fonz:

Oh wow, I thought I was learning something about these bags and you just made me realize again, I have no idea what I'm talking about lol. Yup, I guess the 257 is completely out of production?

Okay, so......Looks like i'll be getting a 257 from eBay or something then. Not sure why I didn't realize that, I've been looking at the Filson site too.

So i guess i will see when I go to the Filson store in manhattan, what the 258 is all about and just how bulky it is.

How is the return policy through eBay, if lets say I ordered two bags to decide and then sent the other back? That could be an option of course.

Still leaning towards the 257 overall in Otter green. Just gotta finish this thread in its entirety, then probably order from eBay. I'm still learning what to look for, in terms of what year to go after. Again, the thicker better bridle leather is what I'm researching mostly, other than size comparisons.

I just love the OG, its for me. At least I know the color haha. As far as zippers go, I still have yet to look into what makes the older talon zippers better. I've always chosen bags with YKK zippers and have done pretty good with them.

I know, still pretty newb-ish stuff. But, i'm still learning....

For those of you who know me, know that I am a bit of an investigator at heart, always trying to get to the bottom of something, even of it takes me all night. Why do I do it? Well of course for you guys :fonz:. I am to say at the very least shocked to hear this from Filson CS...or am I? (again those of you who know me, probably can tell I'm being facetious)

Eric Padilla Wed, 05/02/18 11:57:08 am America/New_York

Welcome back! Do you have any questions that I can answer for you?

Matthew 11:59:51 am

I've read 2 reviews on Filson.com that you don't cover zipper repair/replacement under your lifetime warranty on the rolling carry on suitcase . I am looking at buying a used 2002 version and would like to know what the real deal is before buying. Zippers are usually the first thing to go on suitcases.

Eric Padilla 12:02:14 pm

Correct, unfortunately we cannot do repairs on luggage zippers as stated in our special services page under "Repairs We Cannot Make"

Matthew 12:04:11 pm

Can I ask why not, if you do zipper repairs on most of your other rugged twill bags?

Eric Padilla 12:08:31 pm

It's really dependent on the zipper itself. Some of the luggage has the old YYK zipper which caused issues when attempting to repair the zipper, however we do have newer styled zippers that can possibly sustain being repaired, however that would need to be determined by the repairs department.

Matthew 12:13:05 pm

Ok thanks. So if the old YKK fails, why wouldn't you just replace it with a current Filson-YKK zipper under warranty? This way people can hang onto heirlooms and not have to buy a new one. I am very confused here.

Eric Padilla 12:16:36 pm

Because of the amount of wear that would happen to the fabric from being re-punctured. It would weaken the structural integrity of the bag.

Matthew 12:19:50 pm

ok thank you for your time. I still think the structural integrity of other bags you repair/replace under warranty bears the same risk of being weakened, but that's just my opinion.

Eric Padilla 12:25:14 pm

It does increase the risk of failure with that type of repair, however the repairs department determines whether or not the fabric can handle a zipper repair/replacement.

Matthew 12:27:53 pm

Ok thanks. So if the repair Dept can't make a repair why not offer to replace the bag under the lifetime warranty I guess is my final question. If a zipper fails (in the case of the reviewers), it shouldn't be on them to replace the bag.

Eric Padilla 12:31:30 pm

That is dependent on factors such as age of the item, and whether we still carry the product. We will not replace an item that was not purchased from Filson or a Filson Authorized Reseller.

However if an item is only a few months old, we will replace the item, but if the damage was caused by something that we have no control over such as airlines, we sadly can't replace the item.
Is there anything else I can assist you with today? 12:35:49 pm

Matthew 12:36:20 pm

nope that is everything thank you for your time

Eric Padilla 12:36:51 pm
Thanks for choosing Filson and have a great rest of your day!

Good lord. That’s vast. Any idea how big it is compared to the large duffle? I struggle to carry a full large duffle for very long but the squareness of this LTB is something else.
Lovely colours on the straps.

@speedy611

OG LTB vs HT LD shown for comparison.

LTB is definitely shorter in width and maybe a little taller than LD. That HT bag is H E A V Y .... and can't imagine carrying too long without getting shoulder burn. I just use it for long road trips where it just gets thrown in back of the pickup. I'd say the LD is about 50% bigger in volume.

I can get you a 257 in any color you want as long as it’s tan and navy...

Also, just wanted to add......Coming from bags with more external exterior pockets for organization, and even some with an Admin Panel pocket (the 258 kinda has this exterior pocket), I was looking on google images of some "purse bag organizers" and got some pretty cool ideas. It would be nice to drop something like these inside the more open bag like a Filson.

But, the more I read and appreciate the Filson ruggedness, the more that idea seams sacrilegious. Why would I buy a nice rugged twill and leather beautiful Filson bag if I'm going to drop in a damn nylon piece of crap/not matching in design at all, type of thing to change the bag. Might as well look at other bags then, right?

I feel that for me personally, I will just be able to re-organize placement of things in my head, and will eventually just get used to the Filson type of setup. Its just different for me really, nothing more. Even most backpacks have the pen and miscellaneous pocket on the outside, apart from the main cavernous pockets.

But, with Filson, its almost more like the smaller things go directly in the middle of the bag, in between the books or laptop or whatever. So, just a different type of organization I suppose. Hey, I like changing it up anyways, there is probably some negatives to having my small nic-nac pocket (usually with expensive items anyway) being on the outside where someone can just unzip and steal something if you fall asleep on a train or something....

Anyone feel similar? Or different? I would love to hear some general concept type thoughts on your opinions of how these bags (probably 257-ish type bags) handle your smaller Admin panel type stuff?

Again, I tend to think about the pockets and what I now need to buy to fill them lol. I've always been like that. New bag means new pocket knife and small flashlight just to keep in that bag, some new pens and accessories for the smaller pockets, etc. Even a nice new leather type of notebook/journal (still to research and find) for notes that goes well with the feel of the rugged Filson feel....

And, usually this could end up going further in more of a general change up for me. Perhaps a new wallet, watch.....I don't know! It could go anywhere!!!
(actually that reminds me, i keep forgetting to drop of my redwings for new soles since mine finally ripped through lol, i know, unrelated)

Yea......I'm that guy I guess......

just loving this thread so far though, and real glad I found this forum. Big trouble for the old wallet though...

I totally love the 258 for some of the reasons you are mentioning. To me it feels like a 1/2 - 3/4 Sportsman (#266). It's definitely big and will swallow most everything you can need in a days work but it does get heavy if you don't have a good shoulder strap. I have found the wide strap they sell at Filson currently (original appeared with the XLD) really spreads the weight well so I hardly notice. It lets me adjust on my shoulder without re-centering the shoulder pad. I run my daily configuration as shown in the picture below ...... not too many things so there is always ample space left in bag. In my setup I could probably add a full packing cube easily for short travel. I use the admin pack for my small basics and it hops with me from one 258 bag to any of my other 258 bags. It rides right up front in the zippered pocket. I toss my wallet and phone just behind the zippered pocket under the snap closure for easy access I could put the water bottle in one of the sides but I prefer tossing it into the bag. I think the 258 is just classic good looks all around and unmistakably Filson.

Tom, you have some AMAZING patina on your bags. Did you buy any of these bags unpatina’d or did they come looking that amazing?

The LTB I got new in late 90's and the patina is mostly from car travel. The 258 is a recent Filson rescue from Ebay that has a few more miles left on it. I have some other newer 258s .... a heavy tin version (near impossible to patina, still looks new) and the Nordstrom rack deal in brown (does brown patina?). The brown 258 actually has fantastically thick twill and I just had to have it when I saw it in person and handled it. The $189 price tag didn't hurt either. I like these for air travel since they don't look too unkempt and appear more professional. The Talon OG 258 rescue I use for everyday work says I am retired and I don't care what you think.

I also very clearly remember a beautiful small carry-on bag that you rewaxed with the soy wax with a beautiful patina as well. They must ave done a heavy tin collection in a number of things. I saw on insta that gz has a heavy tin open tote, very interesting.

Yeah that small carry-on was a late 90's grad school thing. But oh man I love me some heavy tin ... I have that HT open tote too (gets a grocery getting workout every other day). I think Soletrane has one for his workouts at the gym. Also picked up the zippered tote in HT as well. Used primarily for air travel for low-key look. Since GZ is THE Filson bag hookup specialist I wonder if he has the small field bag in heavy tin ???? Howz your weatherproof briefcase working for you? That new leather is tempting especially if it was in a 240 carry-on format.

The leather straps on your brown 258 look great! My brown 258’s leather straps look just like the OG 258 that you have placed beside the brown one :/ $189 is a fantastic price for it!

I was thinking how did you manage to get your LTB past the cabin attendants at the boarding gate at that kind of carrying capacity. I suppose it’s mostly car travels when you’re using it as you have mentioned...

Oh man, it’s fantatic. Looks better every day. I’ve added some good patina with a couple of incidents over the last 6 months too. The 261 has been my new go-to lately tho. It’s been a perfect every-day bag.

Hmm... without going into much details. Let’s just say I prefer my leather straps more rusty brown than blackish brown I guess :)
Gotcha. Filson changed their finish on the leather a couple of years back. Leather consistency and overall quality was actually better back then IMO. But yeah it’s a little darker and doesn’t really lighten up much.

Haha, let’s just leave it at that yah. That said, great pics all around! Here’re what remains of my Filson litter in my canvas bag corner after some trimming recently. Glad to say half of the Filson released twill colors are represented other than black, white and red. I do catch myself lusting for the HT 256 from time to time :/
