I walk about six miles a day. I find I can do so in jeans.

My neighborhood is basically a huge circle. I walk it routinely (takes about two hours).

By 'not outdoorsy', I mean I'm not a hiker, a mountaineer, or a jump-in-the-sea person. I'm not against exercise or 'being' outside.

At times, I don't wear them unless I'm swimming really. I work outside a lot and if I wore shorts I'd have melanoma on my legs and 8 billion scars, so no. I think it's okay, just stupid.

Either way, unfamiliar with the concept that it is unacceptable to wear shorts in public.
From the southeast USA......so, perhaps that is a major contributing factor to my opinion.

On a nice spring or summer day shorts are great for casual occasions such as yachting, playing tennis, lounging in the garden, spending time on the beach, and many other activities. I love wearing khaki, yellow, red and other various colored shorts. NO socks of course, I'm not going for a Bermuda shorts look.

I'm lucky to have good looking legs, for some men wearing shorts is well, not a pleasant sight.

I wear shorts when I'm going to the beach, to somebody's house (with a pool and I've been invited to swim in it), when I do some intense bicycling, at the gym, hiking on the Amalfi coast or some such area. Anywhere else I wear long pants; if it's so hot, your legs can't take it, wear linen pants.
