They haven't arrived yet but the artisan sent me these photos.

I personally think the frame is a bit thick but I guess that's the way it has to be for strength purposes.

The artisan is Scott Urban of Chicago. Look him up. As for the cost, it was a barter. I exchanged a portrait made of Legos for this pair of glasses. This is a portrait that was made of the artisan (when seen from afar, it is much better):

I guess it is bespoke. The design was based on an old pair of glasses. That's how he was able to figure out how large to make the frames. He then sent me a design via email and I then gave him my critiques of the design and using a drawing program, erased the lines I didn't like and drew in new lines. At first, the design was a bit round but I redrew the design to make it more square.

Yeah, in economics class, the professors always told me that the world would suck if bartering was still performed. But I think bartering still has its place.

Haha, that's so awesome. Very creative idea of you! I know I would never think up of something like that.

edit: I should add that the glasses are pretty cool too, I was just more impressed with the legos :)

Actually, most tortoise shell glasses are cheap plastic. This Scott Urban guy also makes animal horn glasses but the cost is slightly higher. But tortoise shell is way too expensive and is not done much anymore. I'm sure you can find someone who will make one but at a very high price. But wood isn't suppose to mimic anything. It is suppose to be clearly wood. I chose this wood type, Panga Panga, for the wood striations. Other wood types aren't this striated.

Indeed; tortoise-shell has become a sort of color term. Actually, finding someone who even knows how to fit lenses into a pair of real shell frames is a job. Only the French and Japanese still have "artisans" who make tortoise-shell frames. How does this type of wood feel? It doesn't look very smooth.

Well, it hasn't arrived yet. I actually didn't want him to sand it down too smooth or put a layer of lacquer on it. I wanted it to look like natural wood.
