My Father has both (wanted a fun car and a car he could use with clients) and I can tell you they are both rock solid. Each has about 40,000 in 2 years and to my knowledge there has been not technical issues at all. The A8/S8 is particularly nice with a good spec. Having the rear seat entertainment, reclining seats and a proper table to work at can be a god-send on long journeys.
Having said that, without the fancy extras it is very much like an S6, but with 3" more room in the back, so I'd be inclined to save the cash and upspec the lower model rather than get the stock S8. All depends on your budget.
