Bought a 39R suit but found out it was a bit big...

Hey guys,

I am new to the forum so this is my first post. Recently I was searching for a suit and came across a Hart Schaffner Marx 39R Gold Trumpter suit. I normally wear a 38R but I want to make it work since I think it's a great deal.

Is it possible for a good tailor to make this work? Compared to my current suits, this jacket has about 1.5-2" on the shoulders, waist, and chest in extra space.

If you've already bought it, then yes.

If you haven't bought it , then no.

1.5-2" on the shoulders is a big difference. I tailor can more easily slim the chest and waist, but shoulders are more difficult.

Is it possible to do without ruining the suit? I have not yet bought it (misleading title, sorry I didn't proof read) but at the price I have found, I can afford to spend a lot on hemming and still save plenty off buying one from a store.

Don't do it! If you have a really good tailor, he/she can probably make it work. But for the added price, get a correct fitting suit and pay for the minor alterations(if needed!)

Just to add to the chorus here: don't do it. I have done the same (bought a 39, more than once, being a 38, and they just never work out right and are too big in the shoulders). For what that's worth. Size 38 will also come on sale, esp if you watch the B&S forum here (where knowing your measurements will be a big help, given the variation even within jackets of supposedly the same size).
