I actually wear them with a sport coat and tie for relatively casual work (bus casual but free to wear sport coat and tie if I want) and church, etc.

I would not wear it with a suit. Most folks on the forum will disapprove, but no one has ever mistaken me for a gangster, etc.

It's the black suit we hate not the shirt. I think a black button up can be a great casual look. You can pair it with a nice dress jean for a night out you cna even accesorise it with a nice vest or tie to dress it up even more. There isn't much black dosen't go with, which also makes it a very versatile article of clothing.

Depends on your skintone, I suppose.

I'm light brown/olive skinned with a perpetual tanned look (since I spend a lot of time outdoors - climbing). White shirts just look wrong on me, and contrast rather sharply against my skin tone. Therefore, even for professional settings, I prefer light blue or other colors.

Black goes well with my skin-tone (as do most dark colors) and well, chicks dig it. So, that's all that matters.

Keep in mind that a lot of the WASP-wear advice that you get is from, well, folks with paler skin. So, depending on how your skin looks, you may need to choose accordingly.

And for reference, there's always the seaons chart thing.

I wouldn't use it with a suit, but I sometimes wear it with jeans...

Many occasions including business. Ignore the rather silly anti-black brigade. It is more informal so you do have to match occasion to shirt.

Ah, you may be on to something here. This may explain some of the more dogmatic injunctions against certain colours and colour combinations. It bears repeating that certain complexions go with a wider range of colours than others.

Yeah, but that guy could wear a clownsuit and still get any girl he wants.

I think black shirts look a bit tacky. People with darker skin can wear them, but very few manage to pull it off.
