Does Edmonton have much of a shopping district? Specifically in the city center? I'm aware Edmonton is home to the largest suburban mall in the world. I'm wondering how bad that has decimated the rest of the shops. I've never been to Edmonton but would like to go sometime.
I don't live in Edmonton (yet), but truthfully I don't even find West Edmonton Mall to feel that big at all. In fact, I'm pretty sure it's #3 or 4 on the "biggest" list these days. In terms of shopping in the sense that we like, I'd have to believe that WEM has had no negative effect on the rest of the city at all. If anything, it has likely pushed the better stores to the more interesting areas near Whyte Ave for example. It likely has also helped bring the higher tier H&Ms, etc. to the city (i.e. over Calgary) - if you consider H&M a positive. Edmonton is definitely no Vancouver/Montreal/Toronto in terms of shopping, but Calgary definitely isn't either. I'd be interested to see what others think however.
