I think it's more being able to get exactly what you want rather than searching the shelves for something.

I've seen some great fits for OTR although most guys would still need a few alterations

And again in Australia it's comes back to lack of good options for men so your OTR selection is fairly limited

Would be quite tragic to lose your collar bones, but I reckon you're referring to collar stays.

This is all a personal matter. I used to religiously use them on my shirts - because all of their collars were quite wide and / or spread.

I lost the collar stays on my PJ shirt and while I mourned their loss briefly, I am now quite happy to wear that shirt without collar stays.

On a separate note: I confess I don't know you well enough, but I'm making 2 calculated assumptions - (1) that you're new to dressing up; and (2) when you say "what would Patrick Johnson do", I read it as 'how would Patrick dress?' And not 'how would Patrick make my shirt for me?'

If my assumptions are wrong, you can stop reading here. Otherwise:

In your circumstances, trying to emulate Patrick's personal sense of style isn't a wise thing to do. Slowly nurture your own. Patrick dresses like a fly motherfucker (90% of the time) and few people would disagree. But that's his personal style. it's a sum of his personality, his character, and his lifestyle.

I would advise you the same if you had asked "what would agnelli / Luca rubinacci / Lapo elkann / guido Wongolini do?"

Instead, what can be distilled from their dressing (specifically Patrick, Agnelli and Guido, and even Luca) are lessons on appropriate fabrics for weather, eye for detail, and the journey to finding your personal style. What you can learn from Lapo: it doesn't matter what the **** you wear if you're famous.

Take your time to find out what suits you and what you like -- Off The Rack might not fit well at times, but Off Another Person's Rack will be even more ill-fitting.

The Patrick Johnson reference was more tongue-in-cheek than anything, though I think his Neapolitan (sporty, slightly minimalist) style suits Australia more than a Savile Row approach.

Actually, I think that collar stays can also be called collar bones. For what it's worth (and perhaps she's just odd), my mother has always called them collar bones and so I grew up referring to them like that ("Always take out your collar bones before you wash your shirts!").

Anyway, I do prefer wearing bones/stays in my shirt collars as I like a light interlining and I find that my collars just tend to be a bit too floppy and that the collar leaves don't always sit nicely and can look different from one another (ie one lying down a bit, the other sitting up and rolling a bit more) if I don't wear stays.

Wear them if the collar is too floppy otherwise. Some shirts need them and some don't.

Well said, in addition, I also look to people like Patrick, Ethan Newton and Alan See for references in how to coordinate stuff - I guess this comes under 'eye for detail'.
