Oh son of a ***** I typed out a big post then hit clear. Abbreviated version:
Weight loss and lack of caring about suits mean I don't have any decent suiting options to wear (when I thought I did) on a trip to Las Vegas in 2 weeks. Because it will be for going out to clubs I don't want to spend too much. I'm also losing weight and building muscle (9kg down, 6 to go!) so I don't know how much use I will get out of it in the future but I do have a wedding to attend in late September so it'd be nice to use it there too.
With an self inflicted budget of $400 what are my best options? I'm thinking Zara and Azzaro at this point, anyone else I should check out? Anyone got any other thoughts about how I could handle this situation?

Have friends who just came back from Vegas - you'd be somewhat overdressed in clean baggy shorts, clean T shirt and white sneakers.

Agreed.

Went twice last year. Anything without UGG Boots is dressy. I am not kidding. The trashiness of the place is mindblowing.

Just wondering - I could be overanalysing here.

How long should my suit sleeve be? How long should my shirt sleeve be? and naturally, the next question is how much shirt sleeve should show under the suit sleeve?

Thanks (sorry for the basic questions).

Jimbosaurus : Did you ask the same question on the ski forums?

In any case, for your budget Enrico Coveri could be an option at Azzaro. He also has some charcoal suits that come out of an Armani factory in China. There is also the possibility of getting a good deal on older stock that is within your budget.

I'd also look at Oxford, perhaps a DFO store if they aren't on sale.

Not possible to over analyse on a clothing forum. Just do a search on Naples Tailors /Perfect Trouser or Spella or to feel relatively "normal" search Green Leather Hermes Breast Wallet.

In an ideal world* I'd say the old guideline of shirt (linen, underwear) to bottom of thumb bone just a smidge over wrist line and jacket to wrist bone just behind wrist line.

Or show up to, but not more than, 1/2" of shirt cuff.

*caveats:: you don't want to be altering jackets up and down all the time -sometimes its button problems - so different jackets might look different. Adds to the pleasure. Plenty of people look ok with jacket sleeves showing no linen. No one looks ok with a jacket sleeve too short - despite what fashion pages will tell you.

Shirt sleeves if they are the right width - just adjusted by shifting button on your average shirt - can't be too long as the shirt is stopped at roughly the right point if the opening is narrow width. However if you take your jacket off a too long shirt sleeve will look bunched up like a pirate shirt.

Having a slightly longer shirt sleeve helps to keep it at wrist when you reach out for a cup of coffee or the last sushi roll at the meeting or to reboot windows or to shake the new bosses hand.

Real men do not wear short sleeve shirts - they roll up sleeves. However I'm told short sleeved open necked "sports" shirts can be acceptable in summer at the beach or at a casual BBQ amongst family.

Short sleeve shirts WITH a tie aren't even funny in an ironic Thornbury hipster way.

edit:: I forgot to say that French /Double cuffs are easiest to shorten - just add another button hole on the inside fold. And given that no one will ever see it - it doesn't matter if its done on your home sewing machine.

Having slightly longer shirt also means that when you reach out a hand you cannot flash your awesome shiny watch at people. That's why I try to have my sleeve just resting on top of the bone which is the start of the thumb - even with the cuff unbuttoned the shirt sleeve doesn't slide down. The shirt cuff ride up with my jacket sleeve and I prefer it that way. My preference for shirt cuff flashing is up to 1cm.

Thanks for the perfect answer fxh!

I'm actually working for a guy at the moment who wears short sleeve shirts with ties. Pretty tragic. When we go to meetings people tend to think that I'm the boss....lol

Isn't that what I said little buddy? - sleeve of shirt to bottom of thumb bone.

My awesome watches were mainly purchased in night markets in HK, Beijing, Kaohsiung and @ Rivers warehouse.

Flashing your watch is like flashing ********* - the thrill is only yours, its unsophisticated and most people have seen bigger.

It's a numbers game fxh buddy. Just a matter of time before I flash it to someone who haven't seen bigger and be impressed by it.

Ahhh, this old chestnut. I struggled for a while on this when starting out. My rule of thumb has a lot to do with the type of lifestyle I lead when suited. I typically sit on my arse all day, mostly without a jacket on. Because of this, I start with the shirt sleeve length. For me, the ideal shirt sleeve lenth is the length at which, when seated at a desk or meeting room table, I can place my elbows on the table, with my hands held up towards my face, and the cuff still comes up just below my wrist bone on the arm side. IMHO it's a waste to have a nice shirt where the cuffs go halfway down somebody's arms when in this position. Using that as a guide, this gets me to get to the point of when I have my hands down by my sides, they shouldn't fall too much past the hand side of the wrist bone. Of course this depends on how snug your cuffs are - on my MTM shirts this is prety much the case, with my ORT shirts (mainly French cuffs), they ten to fall a litle further.

Once you get your shirt down pat, then you work backwards to figure out how long your jacket should be so that when standing with your arms by your side you get 1-1.5cm of cuff showing.

This is what works for me anyhow.

Unlikely
Yeah but what about your watch?

It is even less likely for my watch. It's a mid 90's quartz with a 34mm case.

To add to checkstar,s reply - it also depends on how slim your shirt sleeves and jacket sleeves are.
A slim/narrow/tight shirt sleeve with high narrow arm hole will pull up more when you bend your elbow (bend elbow hehe) and pull up cuff more. Conversely a wider sleeve with wide arm hole will tend to leave sleeve cuff un pulled up (is that's word.)

Simialry a narrow jacket sleeve will pull shitt sleeve up more than a wide jacket sleeve.

Seems complicated doesn't it for something most people have never thought about or noticed.
