Wondering if anyone here shops or browses Harrolds in Pitt St Westfields? I go there every now and the, but since i'm just a kid i feel intimidated especially when no one is in there and all the sales people are either desperately latchhing onto me or giving me furtive glances telling me to get the **** out. I obviously can't afford anything in there but hands down it's one of the nicest mens stores in Sydney (in my inexperience). And if any of you do frequent this establishment, care to explain the really big fat guy in the suit, bald, but with a 90s ponytail?

Also what are the discounts like during mid year sales?

Looking for some quickfire advice before Monday lunchtime from Melbourne based SFers. Want to get a Cordings suit and two Ede & Ravenscroft shirts taken in. Do you recommend Sam and Fey's in the Docklands or Katrinas? I have had some success with Katrinas before but they are a little far away and seem to have long turnaround times. I am thinking maybe I should try somewhere new and seem to recall a few good words about Sam in the Docklands.

Got a few alterations needed in the next little while so any advice would be greatly appreciated. Short or long answers welcomed. Thank you in advance.

What shoes are they?!
Beater shoes come to papa!

shoes are quoted below :)

Nice! - did they have many pairs/sizes left?

they had a couple. multiple sizes 42, 44, 48

Looks like they are 'Florsheim Wickham lace up" from the Myer website.

@$60 I reckon they're awesome!

Pity they look to be back at $159 on the site now!

http://gifts.myer.com.au/au_florsheim-wickham-laceup-dress-shoe-in-brown_d_10320.aspx

i thought the sale was ongoing through the week.
the sticker said rrp: 159, then marked down to $119 so i got 50% off the marked down price

I was in there and saw the fat dude as well... He was leafing through a rack of suits so I thought he was a customer.

Ridiculous prices in there though. $700 for a pair of deliberately flattened, ugly casual shoes? No thanks.

So, decided to play it safe and go to Katrinas. It was the first time in a while and all seemed good. Got a suit and two shirts taken in. Young guy spent quite a bit of time pinning and checking as the change was pretty decent (suit once let fully out needed fully taken in, shirts taken in at seams on body and sleeves). Got a little rushed at the end but then one of the older guys (not Kim) came and did a few final checks. All up $200 ($45 each shirt, $110 suit). Might seem like a lot but decent changes to the suit. Hope they work out as the aim is no large purchases until P Johnson Tailors in a couple of months but still need something to wear and these are still very good quality (just too big - never considered the negatives of weight loss).

Will pick up either Friday or Monday. May try Sam in the Docklands for some casual shirts later on, we will see how things go. Going to Katrinas gave me an excuse to look at Amercian Tailors sale. My first time there and less stand offish than expected. More Henry Bucks than Harrolds. Was left to browse. Seems like plenty of C & J's on sale and they do sell Lowndes but do not think they were on sale and could not see a price (never understood why shops make this information hard to find). A few other things at reasonable prices on sale and even stuff not on sale was better priced than expected. Almost slipped on my no purchase rule because of the beautiful reversible Drakes scarf in the window (Black Watch/navy with White polka dots at $145) but remembered the bigger picture of first tailored suit and shirts to come.

Anyway, enough from me for now...

Sounds way better than the completely plain piece of 15cm wide by 1m long grey wool knitting being sold as a scarf in DJs for $120...

Hi everyone

So I went down to South Melbourne today to check out this suit emporium, Azzaro, that all my esteemed colleagues on here have been talking up. The name doesn't appear anywhere on the front of the shop, btw, so I actually walked straight past it the first time. But that kinda adds to the mystique when you get inside. "The prices are so crazy we can't even advertise!" that sort of thing.

Inside I saw Canali (awesome), Cantarelli (awesome) and a lot of Versace (...not so awesome).

There wasn't a lot in my size (36 with knuckles that drag on the ground), but I did try on a grey Sarti d'Italia suit which was apparently just a couple of hundred bucks. Fit pic (sorry for the lousy quality):

I also tried on really, really nice navy Mabro sport coat. The owner Luciano said that it was $600, but I got the impression he would have been willing to negotiate. Fit pic:

Has anyone else bought any Mabro stuff from Azzaro? Care to comment? How much did you pay? My budget for a sport coat would top out at $250-300 anyway, so I suppose it ain't gonna happen. Pity.

Anyway, THANK YOU to the forumite who discovered Azzaro, it's obviously a gem. I'll definitely be making a purchase there in the next month or two.

Sports jackets are generally around the $600 mark but of course if you buy multiple items Luciano and Alessandro will generally give you a discount. Of course, those prices are for quality brands with fully canvassed construction..he may have cheaper sports jackets from other manufacturers.

As I've said before, Mabro is good stuff and in the real word $600 for a Mabro sports jacket is an absolute steal. I think sometimes we lose touch with reality in the bargain-hunting environment of SF and the internet.

I'm going to go down tomorrow and check out the new stock of Cantarelli tailor. I'll be searching for Eu 50 and Eu 46 for blahman and ryanohare, any other requests for reconnaissance?

Love ya PeeGee. Alessandro showed me the navy Mabro last time. Too bad I already have a Benjamin navy suit where the jacket look pretty much exactly the same.

I bought from them in the UK before I moved to Australia and when I return to visit. Both are available online and have long histories (E & R is reputed to be Britain's oldest tailor) and royal warrants (Ede and Ravenscroft, at least). Now these alone are only indicators of quality, my experiences and that of others (whole page on Cordings in original edition of Gentleman by Bernhard Roetzel, Ede & Ravenscroft provide clothes for the London Courts and Royal family) mean I rate them. They are classic, reasonably priced, functional and stylish, and have worn well.

Think you can purchase online and read more...

Does that help?

That does help. Thank you very much. I will be in London later this year so am trying to work out who I should visit for clothes and shoes.
