Sulka had that quality of seemingly effortless elegance which I don't really find amongst current brands. Ralph's Purple Label has some of that, but not everything measures up to the same level: shirts for example are a weak point.Originally Posted by unpainted huffheinz

Their shirts are about as well-made as one could hope for. Pattern matching, no fusing, great fabrics, 20 stiches per inch, all neatly done--no compromises I can detect.
Their ties are delicate. They fray easily. Are they delicate or inferior? I still think they look great.

Charvet shirts have proven to be the most durable of all brands of shirts I have owned. I still have a few from a 1990 trip to Paris that have suffered many years of commerical laundering.
I just wish the collars were a bit more generous in scale...but I recently scammed an unlined seven fold Rubinacci tie from another forum member, that that might finally tie a knot proportioned to the Charvet standard collar.

Great question, B.
For clothes I make the distinction between a brand (Hermes, JL Paris, Toyota/Lexus/Ferrari, Sulka, Patek) and a single person's product (Steed, April in Paris), in the same way that I think eating at Spice Market or Vong is different from eating where I can see Jean Georges in the kitchen.
Although company philosophy and identity, especially if dictated and overseen by one person, is paramount - I tend to like products that I can have some specificity in. For example, instead of a Tom Ford suit made for X, a suit made for X by So and So. Subtle, but the distinction is there.

Everytime I get shirts made, I briefly show a Charvet shirt to the shirtmaker as an example of things I like. They usually say, "no big deal, what's so special about that shirt? Our stuff is just as good!" But when the shirt comes, and I compare it to a Charvet, the Charvet always wins on quality.
