Dude is pulling all the fabric to the back anf holding it down with his arms to make it look slim. I would trust the measurements.

yeah that's what has me worried. 23" armpit to armpit is a couple inches bigger than what I would normally wear, but the shoulder to shoulder measurement of 18" is just right. The guy could have his measurements off though.

If I took it to a tailor could the chest be brought in? Or is it one of those things that's more work than it's worth?

Most duffles are cut huge in the chest. You could try tailoring, but it's likely the arms need to be slimmed too. You're looking at a pretty considerable bill and a high chance that it just doesn't look right when done.

Dude this isn't worth your time, the fit will be alright a 40" chest, but you'll be swimming in it with a 36". Tailoring won't be worth you time and money, the shoulders won't lay right, the hood will be disproportionately large, sleeves too wide, ect., ect.

I just bought a duffle coat and I can give you my experience trying to find anything decent fitting. I am 6', smack in-between small and medium. I often buy U.S. clothes in S (38) and European clothes in M (40). I tried on several duffle coats by european manufacturers (all made in England) and quickly realized an M would be way too large. There simply was too much bulk. I ended up getting a 38 coat that fit just perfectly for my purposes both lengthwise and in terms of bulk. I tried multiple coats and decided on a Burberry coat from last season's line that I got at a 60% discount at a factory store. The Burberry duffles were some of the slimmer I encountered (although they seem to also carry a bulkier coat as a separate model).

In short: don't get a duffle coat in your true size. size down one and you might get a good fit depending on the cut of the coat.
