I'd be interested in the new guys sharing some info (old guys, too, if you like). Thanks. Here's mine:

Name five clothing/accessory rules you follow.

1. Correct suit colour for time of day/eve/night
2. Clean, polished shoes
3. Elegant watch
4. Dimple
5. Belt/shoe match

Name your five clothing/sartorial dislikes.

1. Hats
2. Boots
3. Double breasted suits
4. Mismatched ties/belts/shoes
5. Suits of heavy flannel/tweed

Name five things you have learned about clothes/couture/rules/etc during your time on SF.

1. To love the square
2. Shoe value
3. Shoe choice/style/match
4. To wear brown shoes more often
5. To ensure the correct fit of a suit

Am interested in your rule #1: what exactly is this about suit color (or colour as you would say) for the time of day?

Well, it's an arcane rule but a good one, I think. Light coloured suits are too informal for after 6, IMO. Darker greys and beyond for evening unless a white dinner jacket that I'm using for a summer evening concert.

Interesting. Though it would seem that (barring a black or white tie event) after six would be a time for informality.

I wouldn't say so much that there are new rules that I follow, but there are rules that I am aware of when I'm breaking them. 1. No black slacks/jackets/suits 2. Use of shoe trees! 3. Wear a pocket square in pretty much every jacket 4. Nicer shoes, awareness that I'm being untraditional when I wear balmorals w/odd trou/khakis/jeans 5. French cuff shirts, yes, even with jeans sometimes, and nearly always sans tie.
Name your five clothing/sartorial dislikes.
On myself only (wear what looks good on you in good health): 1. Boat shoes 2. French blue shirt + beige khakis + beat-up square-toed "dress" shoes 3. Loafers 4. Too-baggy jeans 5. Crocks You really dislike both hats & boots? Bummer, although I'd have more money if I didn't love both....
Name five things you have learned about clothes/couture/rules/etc during your time on SF.
1. Ditto the PS love 2. Better shoes 3. Wear button-up shirts/slacks more often, especially at work (computer co. - anything goes), and dress nicer when dining out w/fiancee 4. Fun socks - I can't believe how long I subsisted on solid brown, black & white socks

5. Fit, fit, fit (much work to do here, still)

I'm curious to see the tie dimple mentioned there. If a tie dimples naturally, I think that's fine, but otherwise, it usually tends to look a little awkward. It also seems to be a very American thing.

I'm talking suits only. When Pierce walked by our table at Gordon Ramsay at Claridge's in July in a light gray suit with no tie, it jarred my senses. LOL

1. Always with a jacket 2. Suspenders (but only with the jacket so they won't show much) 3. Pants at true waist (but again, only with the jacket) 4. Cuffs (even on jeans, chuckle, but true) 5. Posture as a clothing accessory. (And mine's damn good, for an old guy.)
Name your five clothing/sartorial dislikes.
1. Old guys with pants at true waist. Unless there's no pot and the cuffs are not high-water and the rise has been properly increased by adding crotch wedges of matching fabric. 2. Suspenders w/o a jacket. 3. Nice clothes displayed on poor posture. 4. Sack suits. 5. Cats.
Name five things you have learned about clothes/couture/rules/etc during your time on SF.
1. To really hate sack suits, but that may be more of an AAAC thing. 2. To really hate pocket squares, which until this forum I thought were hankies. 3. To really really dislike those people who are really really into denim (because I peeked in on the streetwear forum by horrible mistake one evening). 4. To really admire the thoughtfullness and spectacular writing of just about all the posts on here. Cordially, Eg Heath

With the exception of Nr 4 (though my tie and shoe colour rarely match), I can nearly always be found doing all the others - usually at the same time.

2. Appropriate colors/materials for DTP
3. No black daywear
4. Shine your shoes
5. Everything fits correctly (well, I try at least)

1. "Buy some light shirts, stupid" (seriously, the best advice for a stuck noob)
2. Parts of garments can conflict with each other in appropriateness
3. Fashion v. style
4. Watches are good. (Sometimes wish I hadn't learned that one)
5. "Dress well, but you aren't 45 yet" (from my wife, tempering the SF influence)

Which reminds me to thank everyone who's helped me out during both of my tenures here. I'll get it one of these days!

Unless I am mistaken, the dimple is an American thing. As I do it, as half of my family is British, I leave the tie undimpled.
