yesterday: 4 miles in 30:09. Felt good until the end when the wheels started coming off.

Today: 2 2/3 miles in around 24 minutes. Just didn't feel like going on anymore, and the do-list was beconing.

Ran 13.1 miles in the ING Georgia Half-Marathon. My time is nothing to speak of as I was running with a group. Will run for a time goal in my next half.

For short races i use the nike Katana racer... i love that shoe.
GeoPa, do you ever do any shorter races?

Today i ran 20 miles in just under 2:15 (6'45 pace). The first 10 the wind was brutal and felt like it was always either against me a cross wind. The last 10 i actually felt better than the first 10. The wind died down but it helped when it was at my back. Towards the end i was feeling pretty good and ran the last 3.5 or so at about 6'20 pace. I would have liked to go longer, but the sun was going down and i was feeling a little underdressed and was afraid of getting chills.
Oh, and i took a gel with me but didnt use it.

Our local running club does an indoor mile series in the winter months (5:35), there are 5Ks on a pretty regular basis (19:45 or so), an annual 10K on campus in July (should be able to break 42, but haven't), and and annual (hilly) half-marathon in November (1:34-something). We even have an annual (extremely hilly) 50-miler, which most of us run as a relay. I've run them all, but I've never tried flats until now.

Your 20-mile run sounds great, you could be knocking on the door of a 3-hour marathon. My own 20-miler last weekend was not so good. I didn't pay attention to what I ate the night before and ran out of gas. 2:40 for 20, which is about 5 minutes slower than race pace for me. There's time to recover and plan, now.

Can you give an example of a good meal the night before a long run. I've been wondering what combo works best. Thanks!

Pretty good times for your age-group (you said 50+ right?). I have never ran a mile race, i would like to sometime though.

under 3 hours should be pretty do-able... i think im going to shoot for 2:50-2:55... the marathon i ran last fall was 2:48 (i was on about 2:41 pace through 21 then started falling apart) , but im not as fit as i was then, so i wont even try to run quite that fast.

20 miles in 3:14. Hit the Wall of China at around mile 17, but kept moving forward. Last long run as I begin tapering for the marathon.

Over my spring break I did my first 5k in 5 1/2 years. Finished up in 23:12. Nowhere near as fast as my old CC time, but it felt really good to finish the race in a decent time. Nice to see the work pay off.

Just picking up again after lazy winter, starting easy today, only a 3K with lots of warm up, hopefully will be back to 10K pretty soon, then I will start cutting down the time.

Hmm. For a 20-mile trainer, I should probably eat something similar to what I would eat the night before a marathon. Before a race, I would also take it relatively easy the day before, stay off my feet as much as possible. I'm partial to pasta and a little shrimp for dinner, but I think rice and bread are good, too. Emphasize carbs and (for a morning race, anyway), dial back on roughage. I always have a couple of beers the night before a race; many people recommend against this. I like baked oatmeal for breakfast (has eggs and sugar in it). During a race, I will eat a Gu about every 10K.

Your mileage may vary. I think the best advice is to eat more-or-less what you are used to eating, but perhaps slant it towards higher carbohydrate intake.

A 15-miler last weekend (@7:08), and a 10-miler today (@7:01). Seems like I should be able to run a 3:17 (@7:30) at Boston in a week but, given the crowded field, that seems unlikely (and it would be a PR by almost 4 minutes). I hope to have a good time for me, though, say 2:20 to 2:25.

Thanks GeoPa - Good luck at Boston!
