Anybody have first hand experience with the messenger bags made by Tanner? (From a quick search it appears not.) I am quite impressed with my belt thus far and I actually think $200 is a pretty fair price for an essentially made-to-order full leather bag. The look of them seems likely to be able to walk the fence between business and casual (which is precisely what I need). I also expect that the brown bags in particular will age beautifully. My only concern would be an apparent lack of compartments on the inside. http://hecklewood.com/?page_id=3&category=10

not sure either, but it looks pretty tasty for a made in USA, single hide, $200 bag. may pick one up myself. i would try emailing them and see if they can't email you back with some pictures or detailed descriptions. post back in this thread when you find out!

I think one of the guys involved is a member here. Screen name is kixslf. He could probably tell you more. Their belts and wallets seem to have a solid reputation.

I'm not very keen on that design, and I have always thought the 'Tanner' brand is too conspicuous on that particular bag. I wish they would've hidden it. $200 is rather steep for the work involved on that bag, as well, it's a clever design in that it only requires minimal stitch work and about 1/4 of a cow, but I prefer details, myself. I think there is better out there to be had.

Firstly, I imagine the folks at Tanner could tweak the branding on the bag. I'm not sure they'd LIKE doing it, but I'm sure they could as all bags are made individually for the purchaser.

I do see your point about the lack of complexity in the bag, but in a way I think that is precisely why I like it. It would seem to be utilitarian and durable, just like Tanner states in the product blurb.

I like my Tanner belt quite a bit, but I'm not feeling this bag... really don't care for the big logo or weird diagonal cutout. Also, I don't think it would really work in a professional setting, IMO.

My feelings exactly. I contacted tanner to see if they could do a 6" deep bag with a divider for 2 compartments, but alas, they could not. I therefore went with a bag from customhide instead.

I believe they are releasing specs of a new model in a few weeks. I'm surprised kixslf didnt mention this.

I've got one of their portrait bags. Love it. Full grain leather, chunky stitching, immaculately put together. Paid $150 when they first started offering it

Yeah, this is true, I neglected to mention it as well.

From the site above:

TANNER spring product update part 1
February 23, 2008 - 12:58 pm

We just officially released the first of three batches of TANNER product for "˜08. We're doing things a little bit different this season, and spreading the whole collection over three releases - belts, wallets, and bags. The belts are up to bat first, with the wallet and bag categories to follow every 4 weeks.

Well, if you like it, by all means.
A lack of compartments is not a huge issue in a bag of that size, a separate neoprene sleeve for your laptop, and maybe cases for your other gadgets if you have them would prove better in the long run anyhow. Do yourself a favor and start using a pencil case as well, I know it's un-American but they're handy.

As someone mentioned though, that is not really a great solution as a professional-looking bag. It falls into the biz casual aesthetic, and you know where that goes... This bag, the edges are raw and it's not very refined looking. Plus, for it to be on the professional side, in my opinion, you should be able carry it by hand as well so as not to wrinkle your jacket shoulder with a strap, and the Tanner doesn't have a provision for that.

How'd that customhide bag come out?
