Facial care - How much is too much?

If you read men's magazines and/or blogs and follow their recs, you could easily have 9 facial products by my count:

facial cleanser
toner
pre-shave oil
shaving creme
after-shave lotion
moisturizer
eye creme
mask
nighttime moisturizer

I'm sure there could be more. I'm curious to hear what people think are the essentials. I guess my overall question is, "How much is too much? Thanks

well, take a look at my one thread on this stuff. the general consensus was that I was using way too much crap, so I toned it down a lot.

Hi Fat-Elvis - I couldn't find that thread. Can you send me a link? Thanks

It seems reasonable to have most of those especially if you have problem skin. Personally I see no need for shave oil, but then again I use a shave brush. After-shave also seems like a waste if you're going to follow it up with moisturizer.

After all that, I'd hardy have money left for more men's magazines.

FWIW, my extensive regime includes:

soap
shaving soap
after-shave

It all depends on if you have problem skin or not.

My skin is clear and isn't too oily or dry, so I don't use anything for that.

For shaving, I have shaving soap (ya I whip up my own lather with a brush).

I have pre-shave oil, but I only use that if I haven't shaved for 3+ days and I want less irritation from shaving all that scruff.

I have after-shave and after-shave moisturizer. Regular lilac aftershave for everday shaving, and the moisturizer on days that I shaved off a thick scruff (I don't like ingrown hairs or razor burn).

And of course, regular hand / body soap. The end.

I've got Anthony Logistics glycerin soap that I use daily in the shower for my face (it's pretty great)
and then I've also got a facial scrub that I like to use, but only every 2-3 days, as it's pretty tough and will tear up your face if you use it daily.
Then I use shaving soap/mug and brush for shaving, and like celery said, I only use pre-shave oil if it's been a few days since my last shave, and then I finish up with moisturizer.

  • Soap when I shave
  • Girls daily moisturizer afterward. Have to use it, because I can't find a men's that soothes razor burn and has SPF15 sunblock too (have already had two squamous skin cancers removed)

Also, occasionally I'll stick tape on my noise, press down and then peel it off. That's about it, and I get carded all the time at age 31.

Just use whatever you're comfortable with. More products = more time. I keep it pretty simple: face wash, light-weight oil-free moisturizer, oil-absorbing face mask (twice a week).

What does non-comedogenic mean? It's Olay Complete for Sensitive Skin.

it means that it's not supposed to block your pores

You really don't need all that crap. All the "products" are just going to dry out your skin (by destroying the natural oil your skin produces) and help it age prematurely (especially those with Vitamin E extracts). This is all I do. I don't use facial cleaner or anything. To clean the face, I either take a shower or clean it with distilled water and a cotton pad. I use virgin coconut oil for moisturizer. It may feel a little oily at first but the coconut oil will quickly disolve. Shaving is the same. I always shave after a hot shower so the skin gets softened. Then I use coconut oil instead of shaving gel. All the shaving gel/cream is just crap that ruins your skin.
