Ive come to realise that I need some leather (dress) shoes to wear casually, in this vein:

DSC01045.jpg

those look like loafers, but lace ups are probably more my thing. I guess im looking for something plain toe and sturdy, brown or burgundy..
ideas? Im pretty much lost here, having focused on work boots for some time.
Not breaking the bank would be ideal, and I dont mind getting worn shoes from ebay.

If some sort of answer is available in an old thread, feel free to link and call me newb.

What's your price range? My first thought would be to try Allen Edmonds on eBay. How do you feel about these? (Allen Edmond's Park Avenue)

allen edmonds might be a good idea. How should I figure out sizing for dress shoes in general? I think open lacing (if thats the word) looks more relaxed, but if I could find some worn ones i might be open for closed aswell

If you live close to a Nordstroms, just go over and try a few on, they carry AE's.

Are Park Avenues basically everyone's beginner go-to shoe?

I've heard the name Park Avenue 1,000 times since I joined. They're pretty snazzy. I'm looking forward to trying some on.

Yeah Park Ave's are great. Cordovan Park Ave's were definitely my first post-SF dress shoes. They're sleak but not that sleak. Since acquiring ferragamos and ballys, I find them less stylish, but they are much much more comfortable than either. Great shoes for the money especially if you find some used ones on ebay. Bobo, I would think cordovan would be pretty much ideal for that type of look.

I'm also curious about AE sizing. The search function didn't make it much easier for me. 10 chucks, 10.5 vans slip, 43 common projects, blah blah blah. I like the pair that are in the supermarket now 10 C. Would any mall stores carry them so i can try on? The only department stores here are Macys, JC penny and Belk (wtf?). I didn't know if any of the smaller mall shops would have them.

the best way is to probably go try on a pair, since they come in different widths. you can try using the AE website, to see if they have a store locator. otherwise you can buy them on endless.com, which has free (actually, they give you $5) 1 day shipping, then you can return the sizes/widths that are too wide/narrow/big/small.

Yeah, half size up from Chucks is a good place to start. They have different lasts and stuff though, so it's hard to say without trying them on. Some I can wear in a narrow, some not.

Park Aves are a lot of people's first shoe here because they need something formal for interviews and business. They wouldn't be a good choice for a dressy-casual shoe. Something like the Sanford, a blucher wingtip might be a better choice for jeans, khakis, etc.

For me Allen Edmonds run very true to size. I wear a 10 in almost everything (including AE), where as my Chucks are size 9.

Allen Edmonds might be a pain getting in Stockholm or wherever you live. The silhouette is also something I'd recommend seeing in real life as it's a love or hate type of shoe. I'm not a fan personally. I know you don't have a problem with chunky shoes having seen your fits, but they have a certain roundness to them in person. I have no better ideas at the moment though.

Knowing Bobo's style I think AEs or Aldens would be a natural fit. He's going to need something substantial to show under the looser fit stuff he prefers. I don't know about the availability in Scandinavia but there are often pairs on the B&S forum.

For a casual laceup shoe, I'd recommend a pair of Alden bluchers over any AE model.
