Hard to tell from blurry photos (the focus is never on the part you're worried about), but that looks like a defect to me. Is it a cut? Can you see the raw shell underneath it?

Here's a couple more photos with better focus:

I'm not sure exactly what it is—it does have texture to it, so it might be a scratch.

It looks fairly minor, and is not in a place that will flex or crease, so you are probably fine, but if it bothers you, you should return them and request a new pair.

I'm considering the Cordovan straight tip bluchers from Brooks Brothers, which are available shipped to the UK for £410 (around $580). They would be my first pair of Aldens.

Firstly, is that a sensible price? Secondly, any opinions on black vs colour 8? I feel the black would be more versatile as it spans the spectrum from casual (e.g. with jeans) to all but the most formal wear. However, there is something rather special about the richness and lustre of colour 8. I look forward to hearing from the Alden aficionados.

Colour 8 is king for a reason. Don't look back!

At $580 that is a great price.

Color 8 is more versatile than Black, in my opinion. You can wear Color 8 with literally anything. Black shell can look a little bit out of place with jeans. Color 8 is what sets Alden apart from the rest, and in my opinion, at that price, you can't go wrong.

Way behind on posts lately.  Congrats to all of those who scored the Leffot Whiskey Tanker.  It's one of favorite whiskey make ups, and this batch looked very delicious!  I got lucky and picked up a pair on B&S a while back.

Seems like there is a little traction in rare shell makes ups going into production.  I've yet to see anything happening in Ravello, but I predict it will happen in 2016.  The last few years its been slim pickings, but what has landed has been decent batches.

I'm somewhat surprised at several pairs of#8 or black shell that have had what appears to be nicks/slices from production.  Fairly easy to do when using a sharp razor cutter, guess they need to cut back on the coffee during that phase of production.  None of those flaws seem to had any potential to cause future issues.  If I had been in those situations I would take the discounts and run!

Hope all of ya'll are doing well.  Congrats to the new Dads.  I'm on the flip side and got my youngest getting married next month.  I'm reaching out to my buds on SF for advice.  Wearing a Darker blue suit.  I have a wide choice of shoes/boots to choose from.  I was thinking something in whiskey, cigar, or ravello.  I've got Ravello shoes NST on Aberdeen, LWB shoe on Barrie, Ravello NST boot on Aberdeen, or Ravello Daytripper boot on Grant.  Whiskey-I've got Whiskey NST shoe on Barrie, Whiskey NST shoe on Aberdeen, along with Whiskey Tanker, and Whiskey WTB boot, and whiskey low vamp NST slip on in Aberdeen  I've also got Whiskey LWB shoe, and Whiskey SW shoe.    Last but not least I've got Cigar LWB, Cigar NST slip on loafer-Aberdeen, Cigar CT boot on Grant, cigar NST lace up shoe on Aberdeen, and a Cigar cap toe blucher.

Before Captain obvious says I've got too many choices.  I know!  Lets narrow down to 2-3 pairs.

Muchas Gracious from Texas!

Steve

Congratulations. Cigar captoe boot or blucher. Or else none of them IMO.

It is something a deer bone will possibly minimize.

It appears to be a scar to me.

Also, the model number is not listed there, which it should be. Can you provide a photo of the codes?

Thank you for your help. That's all I could make out. They're pretty beat up.
